Can Dogs Have OCD?

BearRamp1 With the days creeping up on 100 degrees, we’re finding it increasingly difficult to get outside to work. You know those things like mowing the yard, weed-eating the fence lines, etc. Gotta give David credit though. He was out there the other morning – in the heat, in the sun – installing a ramp for the dog. Yes, you read that right – a RAMP for the dog. The steps on the back porch are pretty steep and while Bear has managed to get up them – he has yet to master getting down. Which means we either have to have ‘wee-wee’ pads on the back porch or we have to carry him which he’s not fond of nor are we. The ramp will make it easy for us too should be ever need a wheel chair – Heaven forbid!!!

Ramp Update:

Just took Bear out to try out the ramp for the first time – he took right to it . . . but we didn’t foresee, nor take into account, that the sun might make the surface like a slide – and as I waited for him at the bottom (David at the top encouraging him to take that first step) – he looked like a snow-skier coming down the mountain sans skies. Spread eagle, wondering where the heck are the brakes and am I going to slow down before I hit bottom????

BearTrunk1After that experience, for safety sake – his and ours – we’ll need to space some sort of ‘grips’ on the ramp to keep us all from sliding. Just add that little project to the list. Along with painting the ramp.  Right now it looks kind of plain.

And, before I forget…. is it possible for a dog to have OCD? Last couple of days, he’s taken to walking a circle around the clothes rack then going along between the trunk and wall (a narrow squeeze I might add) before he’ll come in the house. Go figure. He’ll have to change his ways soon as it won’t be long before he won’t fit back there.

Man Meals

Back to the heat. We find our appetites seem to diminish as the temperature goes up. So the pot of stew I made the other day lasted for 3 days… WOW! I ordinarily don’t like eating the same thing day after day – but with stew, it seems to get better with each day. Of course, those fresh yeast rolls didn’t hurt.

Now, this wasn’t beef stew. It was pork stew. Although if you didn’t know, it would be hard to tell the difference. It came about because of the sale at the store. They had pork steaks on sale for $1.00 a pound. Who could pass that up? Thought they might be good for breakfast and tried frying them. Too tough. So had to come up with something new to do with the rest of the steaks. Hence roasted pork stew.

macchiliI say roasted, because I roasted the meat in the oven (just like I would a roast beef) for a total of about 3 hours (covered) at 325 degrees. Added in the onions, carrots, potatoes, package of brown gravy mix blended with half-can of chicken broth (thought about using cream of mushroom, maybe next time), and seasonings (salt, pepper, garlic) for the last hour of cooking. The meat came out so tender it flaked. Veggies had that nice roasted texture and the gravy was almost perfect. Just had to thicken it with a little corn starch mixed in some water. The leftovers re-heated perfectly in the microwave and we’re looking forward to the next pot of pork stew.

The other meal I call a ‘Man Meal’ was a combination of macaroni and cheese, and chili. Made the mac and cheese the usual way only added in a couple of tablespoons of Doritos Chili con Queso into the sauce for a little zip. Then served it up in individual soup bowls with a large ladle of chili on top and some corn chips on the side. Surprisingly, tasty. This recipe is definitely a keeper.

Copping a ‘tude

When I was working many years ago in Houston, we used to joke that we needed an attitude adjustment once in a while just to deal with everything in the office. Sometimes I still feel that way what with everything going on in the world. The following is a favorite of mine and I read it every so often just to remind myself that I shouldn’t complain and things in my life are pretty good compared to most. Hope you enjoy it and find it thought provoking.

No man or woman is worth your tears, & the one who is, won’t make you cry.

Just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to, doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have.

A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand & touches your heart.

The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can’ t have them.

Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.

To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.

Don’t waste your time on someone, who isn’t willing to waste their time on you.

Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful.

Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.

There’s always going to be people that hurt you so what you have to do is keep on trusting & just be more careful about who you trust next time around.

Make yourself a better person & know who you are before you try & know someone else & expect them to know you.

Don’t try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to.

And my personal favorite. . . .

REMEMBER: WHATEVER HAPPENS, HAPPENS FOR A REASON.
