10+ Uses for Vinegar

Femce_beforeSummer is here and things have really slowed down in more ways than one .  Last couple of weeks were trying – but, we’re getting ‘back to normal’ . . . slowly.  With all the rain we’ve had in the past few weeks the grass is in hyper-grow mode.  Seems all I’m doing outside  is mowing or weed-eating.  And with the temps well over 90, have to save those chores for late in the day when it is a little cooler.    Not to mention, when I get finished with everything – takes a few days since I have to mow and trim in bits and pieces as I don’t have the strength or stamina anymore – that it is time to start right back all over again.

The picture to the right is along the yard where I have yet to clean; the picture below is the front of that area obviously weeded.  I can only manage to clean about two sections a day.  And, what with all the effort  I’m  put into keeping the fence around the yard clear – I dug all those weeds by hand to make sure I got the roots !! –   I have plans to use a non-toxic weed killer along some of the fence lines I’ve cleaned to try and keep the weeds minimized. They always seem to come back.  Sigh.   The weed killer I plan to mix up uses vinegar and the recipe is below if you’d like to give it a try.

Vinegar

viniegar_2015I like vinegar for lots of uses.  It’s effective, cheap and gets the job done.

My favorite vinegar to use is seasoned rice vinegar, although I do keep apple cider vinegar and white vinegar on hand.  This way I’m covered for what ever I want to do.

My Favorite  top 12 Uses for Vinegar [1] (I know it’s usually Top 10 – but just thought of three more.)
  1. Brighten up a salad – my favorite vinegar for salads is Rice Vinegar as it has a flavor we like.
  2. Relieving a sore throat – use as a gargle (50/50 water and vinegar)
  3. Eat a salad or any other food with vinegar to help ward off a cold or flu.   (My favorite fix – I do this every time I feel a cold coming on since I can’t afford to get sick around David.  Knock-on-wood – it has worked every time. . .  so far.  )
  4. Relieving itchiness & sunburn – rub directly onto the affected area for bites; soak in a bath with ACV for sunburn
  5. Remove dandruff by rinsing your hair with ACV after shampooing
  6. Use as a face toner in place of expensive OTC products – mix 50 / 50 vinegar and water.  Discontinue use if rash or redness appear.
  7. Removing warts – place a cotton ball soaked in ACV on the wart until gone.
  8. Use to clean counter tops – wipe down counters with ACV and wipe-rinse with damp, clean cloth.
  9. Use white vinegar to clean out the coffee pot –  run it through a brew-cycle and then follow with 1-2 brew-cycles using clean water.
  10. Use white vinegar for mopping the floor  or in your floor scrubber.  Just as effect as the expensive floor scrubber wash I use to buy.
  11. Use to neutralize bad odors – place ACV in a dish and place in the ‘smelly’ area.
  12. Use to kill weeds in the garden – use a solution of ACV (1 gal.), Epsom salts (2 cup) and dish soap (1/4 cup) to kill weeds .  Mix together and use in spray bottle.   Caution will also kill wanted plants so be careful.
  13. Salad dressings – use ACV or Rice vinegar in your recipes for additional flavor.
